A new Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Office has been inaugurated on March 15, 2016, calling it the Regional Office No. XVIII, Negros Island Region (NIR).

The NIR was created through the Executive Order No. 183 on May 29, 2015 and is composed of the whole of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental Provinces. Regional Director Armando L. Malicse has been appointed to head the Regional Office.

The MGB Central Office gave some existing Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) and office equipment and allocated funds from the FY 2016 MGB Budget to aid in jumpstarting the new NIR's operations and to show the MGB's full support.

Through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the MGB Central Office also requested the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to issue an organizational code to NIR and for it to be included in the Unified Accounts Code Structure, in preparation for its incorporation to the MGB FY 2017 Budget Proposal.

The NIR office is located at Lot 46 Blk 13, Zurich Street, Helvetia Heights, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.
