Technical personnel of the Mining Technology Division representing the DENR Mines and Geosciences Bureau Central Office, in partnership with planetGOLD Philippines, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO)-Daet, Camarines Norte, BAN Toxics, Samahan ng Magkakabod ng Camarines Norte (SAMACANO), and the National Coalition of Small-Scale Miners in the Philippines, conducted a two-day Basic Life Support Training in the Minahang Bayan in Brgy. Casalugan, Paracale, Camarines Norte last April 19-20, 2022.

This training aimed to equip small-scale gold miners with basic knowledge, skills, and response/action on basic life support techniques to save lives. It also aimed to increase participants' confidence when addressing and managing emergencies, which is essential to the nature of work in small-scale mining operations.
During the event, the rescuers from MDRRMO-Daet facilitated the training of participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, and perform life-saving techniques to enable them to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Artificial Ventilation (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation), and basic first-aid. The topics were covered in small group lectures, hands-on demonstrations, and evaluation of case-based scenarios and/or emergency simulations. A total of seventy-seven men and women miners completed the training.

The need for Basic Life Support training for small-scale miners has been identified during the Training Needs Assessment conducted by planetGOLD Philippines with artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) stakeholders. This also addresses the capacity-building training requests of SAMACANO during the organization’s meeting last March 26, 2022.
This event serves as a kick-off activity for the National Coalition Summit and 3rd National Assembly of the Philippine National Coalition for Small-Scale Miners, which will be held on July 29-30, 2022 in Baguio City.
