In line with the 68th Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANMSEC) theme: “Resilience. Reset. Recovery,” the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Central Office and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) facilitated the Mine Safety Field Competition last November 18, 2022 at the Melvin Jones Football Grounds, Baguio City.

A Mining Industry Parade from SM Baguio City to Melvin Jones Football Grounds was held prior to the start of the Mine Safety Field Competition which were participated by an estimated 2,800 representatives from mining contractors, suppliers, professional organizations, students, community development officers and government officials and employees. The opening ceremony was initiated with the welcome remarks of Engr. Jeremias L. Dolino, member of the (Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) Board of Directors, and followed by Engr. Louie R. Sarmiento, PMSEA President, who declared the official opening of the competition.

The Mine Safety Field Competition is an annual event that showcases the abilities of different mining companies on how to deal with their assigned tasks with utmost concern for safety and health within their operation and in their communities. It is worthy to note that women also joined the field competition and took up the challenge of breaking the stereotype that men could only dominate these competitions.

The field competition was composed of the following First Aid; Fire Extinguishing; Hand Mucking; Machine Drilling; Tug-of-Peace; and Fire Brigade Competition. A mine rescue field demonstration was also conducted by the Mine Rescue ERT of OceanaGold (Philippines), Incorporated.

The judges for the field competitions were personnel from MGB Central and Regional Offices. Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Baguio City Fire Station, were tapped as umpires and judges for the Fire Brigade Competition while the MGB CAR, in coordination with Itogon-Suyoc Resources, Incorporated was responsible in the ground preparation.

The winners of the different competitions were awarded with plaques, medals, and cash prizes by Engr. Jeremias L. Dolino, Engr. Marcial H. Mateo, Chief of the Mine Safety, Environment, and Social Development Division, MGB and Engr. Juancho Pablo Calvez, OIC Assistant Director of MGB.

The closing remarks was given by Engr. Calvez.
