Metallurgical Engineers from the Metallurgical Technology Division (MeTD)-Mineral Processing Research and Development Section of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) showcased their research at the acclaimed 2023 Sylvatalks Forum.

The event, titled "Bridging ENR Research and Resource-Based Industries for Sustainable Mining and Wood Production," took place on June 26, 2023, utilizing the Zoom platform to connect researchers from across the globe. Organized by the esteemed Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB), the Sylvatalks Forum has consistently aimed to empower policy and decision-making through the implementation of science-based research results.

Among the distinguished resource speakers at the event was MeTD's OIC-Chief Engineer, Bernardo V. Bitanga, who co-authored the paper entitled "Technical Study on Pilot Scale Production of Nickel Pig Iron from Low-grade Philippine Nickel Laterite Ores." Collaborating with accomplished engineers Engr. Maria Luisa A. Sajonas and Engr. Chris G. Arnejo, the team presented their research that showcased the immense potential of Philippine nickel laterite ores in the production of nickel pig iron at a pilot scale.

The three papers presented during Sylvatlks Forum were as follows:

  1. Effect of Hot Water Treatment on the Residual Strain and Wood Color of Big Leaf Mahogany - Forest and Wetland Research, Development and Extension Center, ERDB-FWRDEC;
  1. Cadmium Uptake and Tolerance of a Eukaryotic Microalga Isolated from a Mine Tailings in Itogon, Benguet Philippines - Aurora State College of Technology Baler, Aurora; and
  1. Technical Study on Pilot Scale Production of Nickel Pig Iron from Low-grade Philippine Nickel Laterite Ores – Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Central Office.

The recognition of MeTD’s research did not end at the Sylvatlks Forum, as their paper has been officially accepted for publication in Volume 33, No. 2, of the esteemed Technical Journal of Philippine Ecosystems and Natural Resources, Sylvatrop. This prestigious publication is under the purview of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the ERDB.

The success of MeTD’s engineers at the Sylvatlks Forum not only demonstrates their expertise in the field of metallurgy but also underscores the importance of research in shaping a sustainable future for mining industries.
