Engr. Carina de Vera Pecson from the Metallurgical Technology Division of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, participated in the 19th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES 19) held in Aotea Centre, Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland, New Zealand last September 3 to 6, 2023.
The Philippine delegate was composed of seven female engineers, including Engr. Pecson, representing the Engineering Professional Organization (EPO) of agriculture engineers, electronics and communication engineers, chemical engineers, sanitary engineers, mechanical engineers, metallurgical engineers, and geodetic engineers.
More than 200 women in fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) personally experienced active interactions during the conference. This year’s ICWES 19 theme is entitled “Shaping the Future,” where featured keynote speakers are recognized in their respective field of expertise.
ICWES, the flagship event of the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES), is where female engineers and scientists from all over the world meet to discuss a variety of topics on current technological advancements.
In addition, INWES is a global organization partner of UNESCO. The Philippines is part of this global organization through the Philippine Technological Council – Women Engineers Network (PTC-WEN) wherein Engr. Pecson is among the Board of Trustees representing her own professional organization, the Society of Metallurgical Engineers of the Philippines.
