Eleven (11) Metallurgical Engineers of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) participated in the biennial Society of Metallurgical Engineers of the Philippines Metallurgical Conference 2023 (SMEP METCON 2023) last October 19-21, 2023 with the theme “Adapting Metallurgical Engineering to Industry 5.0: Innovations, Opportunities, and Challenges Amidst Uncertainties”. The hybrid event was conducted both virtually and face-to-face at the Paradise Garden Resort Hotel & Convention Center Boracay, Malay, Aklan.

The first day of the conference featured company talks and panel discussions that showcased the latest trends and innovations in metallurgy. The second day, on the other hand, included plenary talks and parallel technical sessions wherein three (3) research papers of the Metallurgical Technology Division were presented, namely:

  1. Technical Study on the Use of Blended Laterite-Iron Sand as Feed Material for Shaft Furnace Ironmaking Technology (MGB, DOST, and DOST-PCIEERD Project);
  2. Dry Acid Digestion and Water Leaching of Laterite-based Pig Iron Slag for Scandium Extraction (MGB, DOST, and DOST-PCIEERD Project); and
  3. Optimization of Vanadium Extraction from Philippine Magnetite Ores Using Direct Leaching

Seminars on PMRC 422.1 (Comminution Circuit Design and Capex/Opex Estimation), Air Passenger Bill of Rights by the Civil Aeronautics Board, and Boracay Rehabilitation and Wastewater Treatment presented by the Provincial Director of DILG Region 6 were the highlights of the third day.

METCON 2023 was concluded successfully and had effectively imparted valuable technical knowledge and latest advances to all attending Metallurgical Engineers particularly in the fields of Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy, Physical Metallurgy, and Adaptive Metallurgy.
