Recent years have witnessed an increase in the impact of natural disasters, underscoring the need for proactive measures to reduce vulnerability and enhance resilience. Recognizing this, communities, governments, and organizations are investing in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) training programs as a crucial component of their disaster preparedness efforts.

The activity is pursuant to Republic Act No. 10121, otherwise known as the “Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010,” to support the development of government agencies’ capacities in disaster management at the individual, organizational and institutional levels.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau conducted the training for DRRM October 2-5, 2023, at the MGB 3rd Floor Multipurpose Hall.

The workshop was facilitated by speakers from the Department of Science and Technology's Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, the Department of Health, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Philippine National Police, who lectured on topics such as:

  • Introduction to the Philippine DRRM System;
  • Types of natural hazards that commonly occur in the country;
  • Organization of disaster control groups and using incident command system;
  • Workplace safety;
  • Minimum health standard and basic first aid; and
  • Basic fire safety

The attendees took part in an actual simulation drill on the final day of the program to demonstrate what they had learnt and accomplished during the session.
