The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) – through the planetGOLD Philippines Project – partnered with the Regional Mine Safety and Health Council to conduct a Mine Occupational Safety and Health training program tailored specifically for small-scale miners in the region. This undertaking which was coordinated by the Mining technology Division was held on 20-24 November 2023 in Baguio City.

The initiative brought together thirteen small-scale miners from the Northern Sagada Barangay Small-Scale Mining Association, Inc., along with seven embedded personnel from the MGB-Cordillera Administrative Region, to participate in the training session. The primary goal of the training was to enhance the participants' capabilities in advancing responsible small-scale mining practices. The discussion primarily centered on promoting adherence to occupational safety and health standards within underground mining operations.

This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to elevating safety practices within the small-scale mining community, emphasizing the importance of compliance with industry standards, and at the same time pursuing socio-economic independence. As the mining landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like these play a pivotal role in equipping miners with the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure a secure and sustainable mining environment.
