The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Central Office (MGB CO) received its first-ever meteorite specimen to be included in the MGB CO Museum. The specimen is a 6.7-gram slice of the Orconuma Meteorite that fell in Barangay Orconuma in Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro in 2011.
The meteorite's landing, which weighs 7.8 kg, was witnessed by three farmers Fredo Manzano, Edgar Francisco Sr., and Enrico Camacho Jr. who stored it for nine years. It was eventually acquired by international meteorite collectors John Higgins and Jasper Spencer.
The specimen was given by Filipino geologist Christian Cruz to MGB CO on behalf of the owners last November 30, 2023. Mr. Cruz and the owners are members of the International Meteorite Collectors Association. MGB CO Administrative Division Chief Edna R. Lorilla and Geological Laboratory Services Section Chief Jocelyn C. Villanueva were present to receive the specimen.
The Orconuma Meteorite was classified as a ‘H3-4 chondrite breccia meteorite’. It is one of the seven meteorites from the Philippines that are listed in the Meteoritical Society’s Bulletin Database. The other six meteorites are Bondoc, Calivo, Paitan, Pampanga, Pantar, and Ponggo.
