Chemists from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Central Office participated in the 7th National Conference of Chemical Laboratories, organized by the Integrated Chemists of the Philippines (ICP), last February 26-27, 2024, at the Century Park Hotel, Manila.
This annual gathering brought together chemistry experts and professionals from various sectors including academia, government, and industry.
With the theme of “Harmonization of Methods for Food Safety”, the conference aims to inform chemical laboratories about initiatives on the harmonization of the chemical methods of analysis on both the national and international levels for the provision of accurate and reliable chemical test results to address emerging concerns.
The conference commenced with discussions highlighting the importance and impact of standardizing analytical testing and product regulations, which is to bring different approaches or methods into agreement. Presentations on the different methods and parameters to consider in standardizing analytical testing were then delivered.
Topics relevant to MGB and of interest to MGB chemist attendees include the latest requirements from Professional Regulatory Board of Chemistry in applying for Certificate of Authority to Operate (CATO) for chemical laboratories; initiatives from ICP to enhance the capabilities of some of the Philippine National Police (PNP) officers regulating chemicals with explosive potential; the accomplishment and plan of actions of the Philippines to comply to Chemical Weapons and Convention (CWC); the regulations from the Bureau of Customs for imported chemicals; and the impact of climate change in chemical laboratories.
The conference concluded with a closing message delivered by Ms. Edna C. Mijares, the Chairperson of the 7th NCCL, recognizing and appreciating the active participation of the presenters, sponsors, organizers, and attendees.
This annual event serves as a valuable opportunity for chemists and allied professions to collaborate, innovate, and stay updated with the latest laws and regulations, technologies, and best practices.
