In line with the celebration of Earth Day 2024, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau through its Regional Offices joined the launching of “PLASTIKalikasan: Mining Communities Clean-Up Program,” a nationwide community clean-up involving mining companies held on April 22, 2024.

PLASTIKalikasan aims to provide mining companies long-term platform to collect, recycle, reuse, and/or dispose of plastic waste materials as part of their Solid Waste Management Program in compliance with Republic Act No. 9003, also known as the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.” To ensure continuity, waste management strategies under PLASTIKalikasan shall be integrated into the Annual Environmental Protection and Enhancement Program and ISO 14001:2015 of all mining and mineral processing companies, with appropriate and sufficient budget allocation. Companies are also enjoined to closely coordinate with their Local Government Units concerned and their host and neighboring mining communities for possible partnerships and collaborations in this endeavor.

About 9,400 participants, composed of MGB Regional Office personnel, representatives from mining companies, and volunteers from Local Government Units collected an estimated 49,165 kg of waste from various sites all over the country during the clean-up. Below are the details of participants and waste collected during the said launching of PLASTIKalikasan in different regions:
