A significant workshop to enhance public awareness and engagement in biodiversity conservation was held on May 30-31, 2024, at Brentwood Suites, Quezon Avenue, Quezon City. This event is part of the "Integrated Approach in the Management of Major Biodiversity Corridors in the Philippines" project, organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Biodiversity Management Bureau with support from the UNDP and GEF.
The event is the third leg of the communication planning workshop involving representatives from the DENR Bureaus, attached agencies, and other stakeholders. The first and second legs of workshops were conducted in Regions XI and XIII, respectively, CELPA, Inc. facilitated the event, focusing on developing effective communication plans to boost public awareness about integrated ecosystem management within biodiversity corridors. The fourth leg of the workshop will be conducted in the Mindoro area on the first week of June.
The Biodiversity (BD) Corridor Project aims to conserve globally threatened species, protect high conservation value forests, reduce deforestation, and enhance biodiversity-friendly local livelihoods. There are two (2) pilot areas being implemented for the BD Corridor Project, one in the Eastern Mindanao area (Regions XI and XIII), and the other located in the Mindoro area (Region IV-B).
The technical staff from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, a partner of the project, participated in the workshop, highlighting the collaborative nature of this initiative.
"Effective communication is key to the success of our biodiversity conservation efforts," said a DENR representative. "This workshop has provided us with the strategies we need to engage communities and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our natural resources."
The communication plans developed after the series of workshops will be crucial in achieving the project's objectives by fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of biodiversity among local populations.
