The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted the 7th Brown Bag Sessions entitled, “Sustainable Extraction: Navigating Responsible Mining Practices,” last July 17, 2024, at the DENR Social Hall and via Zoom.
This hybrid event was attended by officials and employees from the DENR, including personnel from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.
The program started with the video presentation of “Better Mining, Brighter Future”, a campaign documentary for responsible mining by the National Unified Information, Education and Communication Program (NUIECP)for Responsible Mining.
MGB OIC-Assistant Director Engr. Teodorico A. Sandoval then delivered the opening remarks of DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations - Luzon Visayas, and Supervising Undersecretary for MGB- Luzon, Visayas and EMB-Luzon, Visayas, Atty. Juan Miguel T. Cuna, CESO I.
The resource speakers for the 7th Brown Bag Sessions are from MGB including Ms. Ma. Lourdes Stephanie V. Leido, Senior Geologist from the Lands Geological Survey Division; Engr. Vernier L. Serrano, Chief, Mineral Reserves Inventory Section of the Mining Technology Division; For. Teodorico L. Marquez, Chief, Mine Rehabilitation Section of the Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division; and Engr. Edgar C. Madera, Chief, Mineral Information and Publication Section of the Mineral Economics, Information and Publication Division.
Ms. Leido started the session with her presentation on “Introduction to Mineral Exploration”, which was then followed by Engr. Serrano’s presentation on “Mining Methods”. On the other hand, For. Marquez discussed the “Safety and Health, Environment, and Social Development Aspects of Mining Operation”, while Engr. Madera focused on “Taxes and Revenue from the Mining Sector”.
After the presentations, an open forum was held wherein the participants both from the venue and online can ask questions for the resource speakers.
The event concluded with the short film “Minsan Kitang Minahan”, which was part of the #MineResponsibility campaign.
Brown Bag sessions is a series of discussions, where invited experts and practitioners share their knowledge and best practices on topics related to environment and natural resources with DENR officials and employees.
