A learning event on effective speaking and presentation skills for research purposes was held on August 21-23, 2024, at Magarra Hotel, Orani, Bataan. Organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)—Career Development Division—Strategy Management and Organizational Transformation Office (CDD-SMOTO), this learning event aimed to equip DENR scholars and personnel with the necessary skills to effectively present different technical topics in public forums, conferences, and meetings.

Attended by sixteen personnel from DENR and its bureaus, the training provided a comprehensive overview of essential public speaking techniques, focusing on the unique challenges faced when presenting research. Participants were taught strategies for organizing and delivering informative speeches, handling questions from the audience, and managing the anxiety that often accompanies public speaking.

Throughout the training, the resource person, Prof. Mary Jannette L. Pinzon, PhD of the University of the Philippines Diliman-College of Arts and Letters, encouraged the participants to engage in the interactive sessions that emphasized the importance of clarity, audience engagement, and the use of both verbal and nonverbal communication techniques. These sessions were designed to be practical and immediately applicable, allowing participants to improve their presentation skills in real-time.

A key feature of the training was the speech performance and critiquing on its last day. The participants were asked to prepare and deliver a presentation on either their dissertation on their master’s program or a technical topic from their workplace. This was an opportunity for the participants to apply what they had learned and receive feedback from their peers and the resource person.

The comprehensive training enhanced the participants' presentation abilities and fostered a deeper understanding of the importance of effective speaking in advancing science and technology.
