The Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) together with the Korean Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), and the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) organized the 2nd Technical Workshop and 2nd Database Workshop in conjunction with the 1st Industrial Minerals Workshop, held last December 2-6, 2024 in Le Palais Juliana Hotel, Luang Prabang, in Lao PDR.

A total of 9 countries, including the Philippines, participated in the week-long workshops. Mines and Geosciences Bureau Chief Geologist Dr. Rogel A. Santos, chief of the Marine Geological Survey Division, and Engr. Edgar C. Madera of the Mineral Economics, Information, and Publication Division was among the Philippine Delegates.

The main objectives of these workshops are to introduce the geology and deposit types of Major Critical minerals in ASEAN Member States (AMS), update the development of the ASEAN Critical Minerals Map, share information on mineral reserves/resources, production, and industry stakeholders, discuss strategies to mitigate supply risks and promote sustainable mineral resource development in AMS.

Dr. Dongsoo Kim of KIET, Dr. Gyesoon Park of KIGAM, and Dr. Young Joo Lee, Director of CCOPTS officially welcomed the delegates and opened the week-long series of workshops.

During the First Industrial Minerals Workshop, Engr. Madera represented the Philippines as an Expert on Industrial Minerals and reported on the country’s National Reserves, Key Industry Stakeholders, and Strategic Policies for Sustainable Supply Chain Management in AMS.

On the other hand, Dr. Santos, who is also the ASEAN- Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF) Project National Coordinator, presented the Geological Characteristics of Major Critical Minerals in AMS during the 2nd Technical Workshop.

The workshops were expected to yield a comprehensive geological characteristic, deposit types of major critical minerals in AMS, enhance database management skills focusing on critical mineral resource data collection, and management, and shared understanding of the critical mineral supply chain between ASEAN countries and Korea, contributing to regional and global supply chain security.

This event is part of the ongoing AKCF project titled "Critical Mineral Management and Strategy for Sustainable Environment in ASEAN". The project aims to promote the understanding and management of critical minerals in ASEAN countries, improving regional cooperation for a sustainable supply chain.
