The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), along with representatives from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau and other bureaus gathered at the DENR Social Hall on June 6, 2016 in celebration of the Sylvatrop's 40th anniversary with the theme: "Sylvatrop: 40 Years of Sharing Scientific Knowledge on Ecosystems and Natural Resources."

The Sylvatrop is the DENR's official technical journal on ecosystems and natural resources and is wholly accredited by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The journal publishes original scientific research papers, research notes, scientific investigation on ecosystems and natural resources topics and related fields.

The Sylvatrop is one of the Philippines' oldest journals. Its first issue was published in 1976 by the Forest Research Institute (FORI) as "Philippine Forest Research Journal." It later became DENR's official technical journal in 1991 under DENR S.O. 245 and had its name changed to "Sylvatrop," which came from the words "Sylva" which means forest and "Trop" which means "tropical." 472 original scientific researches have already been published from 1976 to 2014. The journal is being circulated abroad and in the Philippines for Php75, single issue and Php175, multiple issues.

Dr. Antonio M. Dano, Chair, Sylvatrop Editorial Board and Assistant Director of Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB), did the opening remarks and discussed the history of Sylvatrop, while Ms. Adreana Santos-Remo, Editor, Sylvatrop and Information Officer II, discussed the importance of publication of research work to the scientific society.

The celebration was concluded by the ERDB Director and SEB Executive adviser Dr. Henry A. Adornado. In his closing remarks, he encouraged the attendees to contribute to the journal, to further enhance the scientific research and knowledge of readers. He also confirmed that a cash incentive of Php50,000 will be given to the authors who will be able to publish their original research work and other related articles on Sylvatrop.

The journal also launched its new website, sylvatrop.denr.gov.ph, which will be accessible to the public very soon. Published research work can be downloaded for free for the whole of June 2016.
