The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) is set to participate in the seminar on Sustainable Development and Environmental Conservation for the Mining Sector of the Philippines organized by Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC).

Approximately 150 participants from the MGB Central and Regional Offices, Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, Japanese Embassy, Japanese companies and mining stakeholders will meet at the New World Hotel, Makati on January 23, 2017 for the event.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary and Concurrent MGB Director Mario Luis J. Jacinto will deliver the keynote address. 

JOGMEC is a Japanese minerals and energy company established in February 29, 2004 to secure a stable supply of oil, natural gas, mineral resources, coal and geothermal energy for Japan. In support to its objective, the company developed a scheme for the mining sector that is designed to assist Japanese companies that would like to expand their business overseas. The scheme includes geological surveys; financial assistance; technology development and technical support; information gathering, analysis and provision; mine pollution control; and stockpiling.

The seminar intends to serve as a medium for information sharing on exploration and environmental conservation for the mining sector; building of positive working relationship between the public and private sectors of Japan and the Philippines; and networking.

The topics to be discussed will include the following: Philippines’ Policy for the Development of Mining Sector; Japanese Policy for Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector in Asia; Philippines’ Investment Promotion in the Mining Sector; Overview of JOGMEC Exploration Activities; Pollution Prevention Measures of Abandoned Mines in Japan; Current Status and Futures Prospect of the Mining Sector in the Philippines; and Mining Business in the Philippines etc.

JOGMEC’s head office is located in Tokyo, Japan and has expanded worldwide with offices in London, Moscow, Beijing, Jararta, Vancouver, Mexico, Botswana, Lima and other countries.

Currently, JOGMEC has one project in Salay, Negros Province.
