Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Gina Lopez says she is not anti-mining.

Despite the several suspension and closure orders she imposed against mining operations in the Philippines, Lopez said she is not against the industry.

“I know MGB is there and I want to let you know, I am not against... you know. I have a reputation of being really against mining. I'm not,” Lopez said during her opening message at the Forum on Biodiversity and Mining held at the DENR Social Hall in Quezon City last April 19.

Lopez added she was pleased with Philsaga Mining Corporation and sees a great promise in their area. Lopez also mentioned she likes Manila Mining, except for the acid water issue, but overall, she likes them specially the employees, who are mostly “like children.”

“Like for example yesterday I was with Philsaga and I love them and I see great promise there. They've done a good job and even Manila Mining, I was not happy with acid water but the employees are like, children. I really like them,” she added.

The forum was attended by the Regional Directors of the DENR, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Environmental Management Bureau and Biodiversity Management Bureau. Several topics were discussed including Mining and Natural Hazard Vulnerability in the Philippines; Phytomining and Terrestrial Ecosystem; Watershed Ecosystem; and Environmental Law.
