The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) participated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as they celebrated its 32nd founding year last June 14, 2019. In his opening message, Hon. Secretary Roy A. Cimatu recounts the goals which President Rodrigo Duterte challenged him to achieve. He recalls the triumph with the clean-up in Boracay, managing to return the so-called cesspool back to its beautiful state. He notes a new challenge from the President, which is to turn Manila Bay’s waters into a sustainable source that people can actually use and bathe in.

Secretary Cimatu affirms the Battle for Manila Bay is on the right path, mentioning the government gaining the support of major corporations like San Miguel Corporation, SM Prime Holdings and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation for its clean-up and rehabilitation effort, signing up for DENR’s Adopt-an-Estero program. The DENR coordinated with the Canadian government recently to address a six-year-long problem of sixty-nine (69) illegally-imported international containers filled with solid waste, which were misdeclared as waste plastics for recycling. Secretary Cimatu proudly said our nation did not accede to the Canadian government’s request to delay the shipment of their waste back to their country.

“I am truly honored to receive kind words and praises from different sectors, my co-secretaries, industry partners and the public for what we have accomplished thus far,” Cimatu said. He later added “The honor is not mine alone, I share all the good words and praises with you my co-workers in the DENR. I am just your leader but the knowledge, the hard work and the perseverance are all from you. I draw my strength and confidence from all of you,”

In line with this, the DENR handed out the Environmental Awards for Governance and Leadership Excellence (EAGLE) Award to six of its top performing field officials, all of whom contributed to the agency’s achievements last 2018. Two phases were implemented to assess and evaluate the nominees for the award, with the first phase determining the efficiency of the office in the delivery of service and results through the Performance-Based Bonus system’s good governance indicators. The second one is based on the official’s leadership ability.

It was Engr. Roland A. De Jesus, Regional Director, MGB Regional Office No. IV-B MIMAROPA who took the EAGLE Award for MGB Regional Director category.
