The 34th Philippine Chemistry Congress (PCC) was organized by the Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas (KKP) in cooperation with the Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies, Inc. (PFCS). The event was held last May 28-30, 2019 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. Participants were welcomed by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who delivered the opening remarks.
With the theme “Chembisyon 2019: Kimiko para sa sariling Bayan”, the congress promotes the importance and contribution of chemistry and chemist in nation building through research, policy and management in the field of food, health and medicine, energy, environment and ecology, material, and education. The Congress is the meeting of local and international scientists focused on discussing research and development aimed towards the inclusive development of the country.
The seminar offers diverse training sessions and poster presentations with different topics that align to a specific industry. The whole training is relevant for the development of individuals, as it offers up-to-date research regarding chemistry and its impact to society. At the end of the training, the participants were able to appreciate the role of chemistry in different sector and industry and how it contribute to the country’s policy making, management and development. Both Dr. Leon M. Payawan Jr., President, KKP and Dr. Glenn Alea, President, PFCS closed the event on the last day, thanking the participants for attending.
As chemists/researchers of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the training is very applicable as it will help the employees to gain new knowledge in regards with research, chemical analysis and waste management. It allowed the participants to be well-informed about the management of hazardous waste and to be updated about the research and efficiency of method for chemical analysis.
