The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Central Office conducted its 7th Stakeholders’ Forum entitled “Understanding Gross Value Added on Mining, #MineResponsibility Campaign, and Consultation on Proposed Policies on Mining.” The said forum was held last August 13, 2019 at the Sulo Riviera Hotel in Quezon City. Representatives from various mining companies participated in the said forum.
In her opening speech, Engr. Nonita S. Caguioa, Assistant Secretary for Mining Concerns and Finance, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), said that the mining industry has been contributing significantly to the country’s economy for many years. Although data shows that its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is relatively small as compared to other industries, some regions, like CARAGA and MIMAROPA, are heavily dependent on mining.
Engr. Caguioa expressed the need to establish a link between the mining companies and affected communities in order to communicate and better understand each other. She also reiterated President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s directive to prioritize the protection of the environment as we promote mineral exploration in the country.
Ms. Vivian R. Ilarina, Assistant National Statistician, Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), graced the forum with her presence as she shared her knowledge on the economic significance of mining in the Philippines. She presented data on the contribution of the mining industry to the country’s GDP and employment.
In line with the Bureau’s objective of promoting sustainable mineral exploration in the country, the MGB will be conducting a campaign to inform the public community about the importance of responsible mining. Representatives from the RedAnts Media Inc. presented their goals and plans for the said campaign, which is set to launch on November 8, 2019.
Engrs. Richard Alamo and Robert Glicer M. Domingo of MGB’s Mine and Safety, Environment and Social Development Division (MSESDD), discussed the Proposed Increase of Mine Waste and Tailing Fees, and the Guidelines for the Care and Maintenance Program, respectively.
Engr. Rodolfo Velasco, Jr., Chief of MSESDD, concluded the forum on behalf of MGB’s Acting Director Wilfredo G. Moncano.
