As part of the rehabilitation program of Manila Bay, spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), some personnel from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) as well as from other DENR bureaus, attended the official Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Dredging Operations of the Tullahan-Tinajeros River System which was held last February 22, 2020 at 8:00 AM at the Navotas Centennial Park, Barangay Bagumbayan North, Navotas City.
The dredging operation was made possible through the memorandum of agreement settled by the DENR and private company, San Miguel Corporation last 2019.
A statement from DENR notes: the agreement formalized SMC’s participation in the Adopt-an-Estero program, a priority initiative of the DENR and a key strategy to address the continuing mandamus of the Supreme Court to clean up Manila Bay.
The operation will take place from Barangay Catmon in Malabon City to Barangay Bagumbayan South in Navotas City to eliminate sediments that damage the water quality of the waterway. According to DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, it is important to get rid of accumulated debris as it helps reduce the risk of flooding and improve water quality.
