On August 12, 2020, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) Director, Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano had an online interview on the Philippines Information Agency's news program, Network Briefing News, hosted by the Secretary for the Presidential Communications Operations Office, Mr. Martin Andanar.
The interview focused on what will be the mining sector's next role in response to the national health crisis brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. MGB Director Moncano states that the mining sector is currently looking into several projects which would certify the generation of employment and revenues to the government. He added that through those projects, there shall also be community and livelihood programs and educational assistance programs where mining is operating. He also disclosed that the mining sector's recovery program has been submitted to DENR and to the Department of Finance.
Director Moncano also hopes the public will gain an understanding as to how the mining sector truly operates. He notes that it admittedly have adverse effects, but guarantees there are programs that help in mitigating and reducing the environmental impact brought by mining operations.
He ensures the tradeoff of mining operations will certainly help with the recovery of the country.
