The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) recently verified the application of ground-based radar technology in monitoring the mine pit slope at the Siana Gold Project of Greenstone Resources Corporation in Surigao del Norte.

Ground-based radar is one of the latest technological advancement in the field of ground monitoring, particularly in open pit mines. It is capable of measuring distances at submillimeter accuracy and can remotely acquire, process and transmit vast amount of data simultaneously, thereby providing its users with real-time information about the integrity of the monitored pit slopes.

The use of this technology actively provides deeper insights on the integrity of the pit slopes. It helps in the fast identification of hazards and consequently increasing the advantage of its users in the over-all risk management – mitigating risks and strategizing remedial plans.

The site verification for ground-based radar technology is part of the MGB's efforts to identify applicable, effective and efficient technologies employed in a mine; for its possible adoption in other mining operations toward a more responsible Philippine mining industry.
