Several mining companies in the country, led by those operating in the Caraga Region and other regions, mobilized their Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) and were among the first to respond and provide relief efforts to the victims of the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that hit Mindanao last February 10, 2017.
The earthquake hit the area at around 10:03 p.m., with its epicenter located 16 kilometers offshore northwest of Surigao City, Surigao Strait at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The earthquake resulted to damages of some buildings, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
The said ERTs provided immediate assistance to the injured and affected victims. The mining companies also sent first aid teams and ambulances that brought the injured to the nearest hospitals, based on the on the progress report provided by Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office (RO) No. XIII.
Domestic water was also supplied using the mining companies’ fire trucks and water trucks in the earthquake-stricken areas. Potable water, medicines, food packs and relief goods were also provided to the quake victims. Structural engineers and technical experts were also sent to help in the assessment of the affected areas.
