The Philippine Wealth Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (PHIL-WAVES) conducted a dissemination forum and the launch of Southern Palawan Ecosystem Accounts, attended by stakeholders from different industries and representatives from the Local Government Units of Palawan.
Southern Palawan is one of the two pilot sites in the Philippines for the PHIL-WAVES project. The province was selected because of its abundance in natural capital, combined with ongoing rapid land use change. It also has significant remaining forest cover including mangroves, extensive coral reefs and fishing grounds.
The WAVES project will help the Philippines measure the country’s natural resources and evaluate how these can be utilized equitably and sustainably.
WAVES will provide the key decision makers with scientific-based evidence and information to assess the social, economic, and environmental trade-offs of different resource-use scenarios and their implications on the achievement of sustainable development.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau is part of the DENR PHIL-WAVES Southern Palawan Technical Working Group (TWG).
The forum was held at Hotel Centro, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan last November 24, 2016.
