The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) launched a series of activities in celebration of the Environment Month. The month of June each year is declared as the Philippine Environment Month (PEM) by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 237 signed in 1998 by then President Corazon C. Aquino.
To kick off the celebration, the MGB had a mini-program during the flag raising ceremony on June 5. The employees were reminded of the significance of the celebration and how each individual can contribute to government’s efforts to care for mother earth.
“Caring for mother earth begins with our own selves. If we do our share in keeping our surroundings clean, our collective effort will bear fruit on the bigger environment, which is our mother earth,” said Mario Luis J. Jacinto, Undersecretary and Concurrent MGB Director.
This year’s theme is “Connecting People to Nature.” This invites us to think how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it. It challenges us to find fun and exciting ways to experience and cherish this vital relationship.
Some of the activities to drumbeat the celebration include tree planting, coastal clean-up, estero clean-up and information campaign focused on the promotion of responsible mining.
To mark the month-long celebration, all MGB Regional Offices and mining companies shall also organize their own activities nationwide.
