In his message to the participating students in the recently concluded 4th National Minerals Industry Student Association (NAMINA) Congress, Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Director Wilfredo G. Moncano said that he is proud that the students, being the next generation professionals in the mining industry, are already advocating responsible mining.

“Being the next generation mining engineers, geologists, metallurgical engineers and professionals in the minerals sector, it makes me proud to know that you are already shaping the future of the industry,” Moncano stated.

He encouraged them to retain their enthusiasm to help resolve the current challenge that the industry is facing – to reverse misconception against mining. He said that the future of the mining industry is in their hands so they need to make environmental protection, mine rehabilitation, and social responsibility a top priority.

“Please continue to foster your endeavor to practice and promote responsible mining, and to reverse the misconception against the industry. Make environmental protection, mine rehabilitation, and social responsibility a top priority and prove that responsible mining is possible. I hope that you would retain your enthusiasm and the core values because the future of the minerals industry lies in your hands. I believe in your bright minds,” Moncano added.

The 4th NAMINA Congress was held in Baguio City from November 20-23, 2018, parallel to the celebration of 65th Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANMSEC).

This year’s theme is “Fortifying the Responsible Mining among the Youth.”

The NAMINA Congress is an annual activity of member students in the field of mining engineering, metallurgy, geology and related courses, to promote the practice of responsible mining.
