The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) recently led the conduct of a Seminar-Workshop on the Results of Multi-hazard Mapping in the Province of Antique as part of its Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign aimed at increasing the level of awareness and preparedness of community leaders and educators on natural hazards.

The MGB-led IEC campaign is a collaborative effort of the MGB Central Office and Regional Office No. VI, Office of Civil Defense, National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The undertaking is one of the target activities of MGB in connection with the Geohazard Assessment and Mapping Program, as well as the Hazards Mapping and Assessment for Effective Community-based Disaster Risk Management (READY) Project.

During the seminar-workshop, resource persons from MGB, NAMRIA, PAGASA and PHIVOLCS gave presentations on the basics of map reading, the characteristics of the various natural hazards (storm surge, flood, landslide, ground rupture, ground shaking, liquefaction and tsunami) together with the results of hazard mapping in Antique.

The said presentations were followed by a workshop where hazard maps were shown to the participants who determined the level of hazard susceptibility in their respective barangays by filling up a table. The said table, together with discussions on preparedness plans, served as the workshop output of the participants.

The event, held on July 22-24, 2015 in the CAP Building, Dr. Delfin Encarnacion Avenue, San Jose, Antique, was attended by 523 participants composed of provincial, municipal and barangay officials, teachers and students, clustered over a three-day period.
