Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano, former Officer-In-Charge of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Office No. XI, formally sits as head of the MGB as Acting Director effective Monday, July 10, 2017.

Meanwhile, Environment Undersecretary and erstwhile Concurrent MGB Director Mario Luis J. Jacinto is on medical leave and is expected to resume work as fulltime DENR Undersecretary upon his return.

Jacinto led the turnover ceremony during the flag raising ceremony at the MGB compound in Quezon City last Monday.

In his appointment letter signed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte dated September 28, 2016, Moncano was appointed Acting Director IV vice Leo L. Jasareno.  Moncano was directed to perform the duties of the office, subject to compliance with Career Executive Service requirements.

During the turnover ceremony, Moncano acknowledged that the MGB Director post is a “difficult job” and that he will be inheriting a “problem that's more than decades old,” referring to the negative situation that the mining industry has been facing.

In addressing the problem, Moncano asked for the cooperation of everyone in the MGB.  “I'm asking for your support for us to work together as a team,” he stated.

Previously, Moncano was the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of MGB Region XI since July 30, 2015. Before that, he held the position of Senior Science Research Specialist, and OIC of the Mine Management Division in the same office.

Prior to joining the government, Moncano was a practicing mining engineer in the private sector. He has also undergone various trainings and seminars both here and abroad.
