Fourteen chemists from the Lands Geological Survey Division and the Metallurgical Technology Division of the MBG Central Office, along with MGB Regional Office chemists, participated in the 33rd Philippine Chemistry Congress (PCC), the largest annual gathering of chemists, chemical technicians and chemistry educators in the country. It was held from May 30 - June 1, 2018 at the Philippine International Convention Center.
With the theme “Chemistry: Rising to Challenges,” the three-day event was organized by the Integrated Chemists of the Philippines (ICP) in partnership with the Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies (PFCS).
Dr. Fabian Dayrit, President of ICP, academician and Chair of the 33rd PCC, gave the welcome remarks to almost 2000 participants.
The conference featured several plenary, parallel and special session lectures from both local and international chemistry professionals. Some of the special sessions that the MGB participants attended were: 1) Revised guidelines for the designation of DENR-recognized environmental laboratories by Environmental Management Bureau; 2) Establishing Traceability in Laboratories Accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017; and 3) updated Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water by the Department of Health.
The PCC serves as a good venue for the participants to update their knowledge on the latest chemical technologies, innovations, research applications, and chemical methods. This is also where partners from the chemical industry showcase their products and services through exhibits and sponsorships. Chemists also earn 18 Continuing Professional Development units by attending this event.
The 34th Philippine Chemistry Congress will be held in Cebu City next year.
