The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), thru the Geological Laboratory Services Section of the Lands Geological Survey Division (GLSS-LGSD), continues to enhance its capabilities with the conduct of the “Training Course on Measurement Uncertainty and Internal Quality Control in the Analytical Laboratory.” The training was held from April 10-14, 2018 at the Greenhills Elan Hotel Modern, San Juan, Metro Manila. A total of 40 participants from the MGB Central and Regional laboratories attended the workshop.
With the theme “Enhancing Capabilities and Bridging Gaps Towards Effective Laboratory Performance,” Mr. Antonio N. Apostol Jr., LGSD Officer-In-Charge, highlighted in his welcome address the importance of the training in preparing a laboratory management system compliant with ISO/IEC 17025:2017, or the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
Engr. Juancho Pablo S. Calvez, Metallurgical Technology Division Chief, delivered the inspirational message on behalf of Acting Director Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano. He emphasized the importance of technical trainings in gaining the required units for the Continuing Professional Development Act of 2016. Ms. Jocelyn C. Villanueva, the newly designated chief of GLSS, gave an overview of the workshop.
The resource speaker, Mr. Admer Rey C. Dablio, Senior Science Research Specialist from the Standards and Testing Division of Industrial Technology Development Institute-Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and a certified assessor of the Philippine Accreditation Bureau, shared his expertise on the matter and other related laboratory concerns.
Ms. Josephine R. Uyaco (former chief of Petrochemistry Unit) and Mr. Howell M. Mapoy (newly designated chief) discussed the issues and concerns of the Central and Regional laboratories (i.e., application for Certificate of Authority to Operate and other technical requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017).
The five-day workshop provided guidance on the basic understanding of measurement uncertainty (MU) estimation and internal quality control (IQC) in the analytical laboratory. A hands-on workshop followed the lectures, enabling the participants to come up with their own MU and IQC materials.
GLSS hopes to regularize the conduct of technical trainings and turn the workshop into an annual event to strengthen the geological laboratory services of the MGB.
