The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) continues to enhance the competence of its personnel in the management and analysis of data related to the environment and natural resources.

In a two-stage training conducted by the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI), the MGB and other participants were able to enhance their abilities in the management, organization and analysis of environment and natural resources data through a refresher course on the rudiments of statistics and through a thorough discussion of matters related to the collection and integration of statistical data and spatial information, specifically for the development and maintenance of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) data portal.

Supervised by Professor Martin Augustine Borlongan of the University of the Philippines Diliman School of Statistics (UPSS), the participants were able to re-learn about the following subjects: introduction to statistics; methods of data collection; methods of presenting data; summary measures; and software in constructing charts and generating descriptive statistics, during the Basic Statistical Analysis training on July 9 to 13.

Meanwhile, the Advanced Statistical Analysis training held on July 30 to August 3, 2018, focused on sampling and sampling techniques; estimation; introduction to hypothesis testing; hypothesis testing for one population; hypothesis testing for two populations; analysis of variance; and test of independence for categorical data.

During the advanced training, the participants were able to understand and apply the principles of inferential statistics and analyze survey results in making evidence-based decisions using the PhSTAT computing tool in the Microsoft Excel program.

Basing from the topics covered, the participants would now be able to more effectively manage and explore relevant data and make evidence-based decisions.

The MGB Central Office was represented by Mr. Ariel A. de Jesus, Development Management Officer III; Mr. Renato D. Cator, Administrative Assistant; and Mr. Edgardo Tolentino, Proofreader from the Mineral Economics, Information and Publications Division (MEIPD).

The trainings were conducted within the PSRTI premises in Quezon City and were attended by representatives from the DENR along with its line bureaus and attached agencies.
