The Marine Geological Survey Division (MGSD) of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) held a seminar-workshop for the MGB geologists and personnel who will conduct the sequel Coastal Vulnerability Assessment in the earlier-identified highly susceptible areas.
With the theme “Standardization of Methodologies in the Conduct of Nationwide Study of Coastline Shifts and Associated Hazards as Affected by Sea Level Change and Geological Factors,” the five-day workshop was aimed at discussing and agreeing on the general and specific objectives, appropriate methodologies, and budgetary requirement of the sequel coastal geohazard project.
During the workshop, the participants were able to tackle the outputs and issues/problems encountered in the implementation of the on-going Coastal Geohazard Project, such as submission of reports and maps, deadlines and some challenges encountered in the interpretation of maps and field data.
Resource speakers, Dr. Fernando P. Siringan, Director of the Marine Science Institute; and Ms. Yvainne Santa Maria, discussed the concepts and methodologies vital to the Coastal Integrated Vulnerability Assessment Tools (CIVAT), which is a modification of the globally accepted Coastal Vulnerability Index. Adjustments and modifications on the application of the new tools were also discussed to appropriately address the coastal situation in the Philippines.
As a result, team was able to agree on the methodology which will be piloted by the MGSD in 2019 and will eventually be implemented by the regional offices in 2020.
The event was held from August 28 to September 1, 2018 at the Selah Pods Hotel in Pasay City.
