Geologists from the Lands Geological Survey Division (LGSD) of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Central Office and the Geosciences Division of all the Regional Offices recently attended the National Geologic Mapping Workshop, in preparation for the conduct of quadrangle geologic mapping of the entire CALABARZON and Bicol Regions in 2017.
The Workshop aimed to present baseline geologic data and to discuss the methodology needed to complete the geologic mapping of the abovementioned areas.
Presented during the workshop were comprehensive lectures on the regional geology of both regions, standard methods of quadrangle map generation and basic skills in geologic mapping and fieldwork demonstration, led by resource persons and in-house experts from the MGB.
The MGB Regional Office No. V Director, Engr. Guillermo A. Molina, Jr., warmly welcomed the participants and briefly introduced the five-day training workshop. Dr. Rogel A. Santos, guest speaker and former MGB geologist, presented a lecture on the geology and mineral resources of Camarines Norte.
A two-day fieldwork was also conducted to further enhance the skills of the geologists in geologic mapping.
A total of 98 map sheets of 1:50,000 scale quadrangle geologic maps of CALABARZON and Bicol Regions are the target outputs for 2017 Geologic Quadrangle Mapping Project.
The output will be GIS-based geologic maps which are expected to be extremely useful for many practical applications such as in mineral exploration, groundwater resource and vulnerability assessment, solid waste disposal site selection, land use planning, and other applications.
The Workshop was held at Ninong’s Hotel in Legazpi City, Albay from February 06 to 11, 2017.
