The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) participated in a workshop in support to the promotion of transparency in the extractive industry and help attain sustainable and responsible mining in the country.

Representatives of the MGB attended the Data Drive and Analysis Workshop conducted by the Philippines Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (PH-EITI). The workshop was aimed at introducing the use and features of PH-EITI Extractives Data Generator (EDGE) to enhance the participants’ capability in encouraging different sectors to use applicable PH-EITI data, effectively.

During the workshop, PH- EITI Technical Policy Specialist Marco Zaplan tackled topics on the following: solving cases using EDGE; analysis of various data available in the PH-EITI Country Reports; tips and online tools in data visualization; understanding potential stakeholders and development of sector-specific data projects; making actual presentations using the PH-EITI data; and putting together pitches on why and how chosen sectors should use the PH-EITI data.

Prior to the workshop, the MGB also attended the 51st Philippine Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (PH-EITI) Multi-Stakeholder Group (PH-EITI MSG) meeting.

The meeting and workshop were held on May 10 & 11, 2018 at the CFMO Conference Room, 7/F EDPC Building, BSP Complex, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

According to the PH-EITI website, the EITI is an “international multi-stakeholder group that sets international standards for transparency in extractive industry payments and receipts, where companies are required to publish what they pay to governments and governments are required to publish what they receive from companies.”

The PH-EITI Multi-Stakeholder Group (PH-EITI MSG) “is a group that provides a platform for business and civil society stakeholders to engage government in the implementation of EITI in the Philippines.”
