On 14-15 December 2022, a representative from the Mining Technology Division of Mines and Geosciences Bureau participated in the Strategic Planning for Gender Mainstreaming in the Promotion of Compliance to Labour Standards and Occupational Safety and Health held at Summit Ridge Tagaytay. The workshop was facilitated by the International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office for the Philippines, with the support of the US Department of Labor (USDOL) through the Project on Improving Workers’ Rights in the Rural Sectors of the Indo-Pacific, with a Focus on Women. It was participated by the national and regional representatives from relevant Bureaus of partner government agencies in agriculture, fishing, and mining, as well as workers and employers’ representatives from these sectors.
The said workshop aims to enhance and improve the Project’s gender mainstreaming strategy, in the context of promotion of compliance to labour standards and OSH, to better respond to the needs of women workers both in the formal and informal economy and strengthen the capacity of tripartite partners in mainstreaming gender in policies, plans, and programs. This also aligns with the Project’s strategies which aim to mainstream gender equality in the rural sectors at all levels. The workshop also contributes to further improving partners’ capacity in recognizing, addressing, and mainstreaming gender issues on labour laws compliance in the supply chain of the Project’s target sectors of banana, fishing, and mining. It also aims to establish a community of practice of gender advocates within the context of the Project.
The event commenced with brief discussions on the Key ILO Guidelines and Conventions on Gender then followed by the Overview of the Project Strategy and an Introduction to the Project’s Gender Mainstreaming Strategy. The discussion continued with the presentations of the Philippine Commission on Women regarding Regional and National Experience on Gender Mainstreaming including key National Laws for Women and providing directions on mainstreaming gender. Participants were divided per sector for the planning exercise in the assessment of the Project’s strategy and embedding of gender mainstreaming strategy.
