Geologists from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Offices, along with participants from the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao, recently attended the “Seminar-Workshop on Groundwater Resource and Vulnerability Assessment” sponsored by the Lands Geological Survey Division of the MGB.

The Seminar-Workshop aims to equip MGB geologists with the necessary skills for the proper operationalization of the “Guidelines in the Implementation of the Groundwater Resource and Vulnerability Assessment Project,” issued by Undersecretary and Concurrent MGB Director Mario Luis J. Jacinto thru a Memorandum dated 30 January 2017.

The Guidelines reiterated the previous agreements in the past geoscience workshops and provided for the watershed approach in the conduct of hydrogeological surveys.

Among the topics presented were: 1) basic concepts in hydrogeology, 2) water balance calculation, 3) delineation of potential groundwater recharge areas, 4) geophysical methods in groundwater studies, 5) water and isotope chemistry and use of water quality kits, 6) case study on hydrogeologic techniques, 7) hydrogeologic map preparation using GIS, 8) impact of climate change on ground water; and 9) laws relevant to groundwater resource and vulnerability assessment.

The Seminar-Workshop also served as venue for the finalization of the 1:250,000 hydrogeologic maps covering the 2016 project target areas.

Hands-on exercises on the said topics were also undertaken. An actual georesistivity field survey was also included, where instrumentation techniques and data interpretation were taught.

Invited experts who are active practitioners in the field of hydrogeology, as well as resource persons from the MGB and NWRB served as the resource speakers.

The Seminar-Workshop was held last May 21-27 at the Cocoon Boutique Hotel, Quezon City.
