On November 24, 2017, two (2) mining companies were awarded with the Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award (PMIEA) and 19 companies were awarded the PMIEA Selection Committee (SC) Achievement Awards during the celebration of the 64th Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference at CAP-John Hay Trade and Cultural Center, Camp John Hay, Baguio City.

The PMIEA pursuant to Executive Order No. 399, series of 1997, recognizes outstanding levels of dedication, initiative and innovation in the pursuit of entities involved in various aspects of mineral utilization such as surface mining operation, quarry operation, mineral exploration and mineral processing. The scope of the environmental management, includes among others, programs/projects/activities being implemented for the environmental protection and enhancement of mining areas, development of the host and neighboring communities, land use improvement, exploration and mining site rehabilitation and final decommissioning.

The 2017 PMIEA recipients were the following:

  • Coral Bay Nickel Corporation for Mineral Processing Category; and
  • SR Metals, Inc. for Surface Mining Category

Companies that fell short of the standard of excellence for the PMIEA but achieved a degree of superior performance in environment, safety and health and social development and management were conferred with the PMIEA SC Achievement Awards, such as Platinum and Titanium Awards.

In line with the call for responsible mining that is pro-people and pro-environment, the Mining Forest Program, established by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Administrative Order No. 22, series of 1989, thru the National Executive Committee (NEC), selected the Best Mining Forest. The following were the winners of the 2017 Best Mining Forest Contest:
